The name Belarus is closely related with the term Belaya Rus', i.e., White Rus'. There are several claims to the origin of the name White Rus'.[29] An ethno-religious theory suggests that the name used to describe the part of old Ruthenian lands within the Grand Duchy of Lithuania that had been populated mostly by Slavs who had been Christianized early, as opposed to Black Ruthenia, which was predominantly inhabited by pagan Balts.

“partisan politics must stop at the water’s edge.” In 1947, Sen. Arthur Vandenberg of Michigan took to the Senate floor and delivered what many consider to be a “speech heard ‘round the world.” That phrase means simply that internal debate that Americans engage in daily doesn’t extend past our shores, that the president shouldn’t be undercut by partisan politicking at home, but instead U.S. politicians should present a unified front.

Poll: Trump and Biden are " neck and neck" in Florida, as of today. The origin of this phrase appear to be from horse racing, where two or more horses that are evenly matched might run closely together towards the finish line, side by side. When this happens, the horses are said to be ‘neck and neck.’

lame duck, 跛脚鸭
In politics, a lame duck or outgoing politician is an elected official whose successor has already been elected or will be soon. The official is often seen as having less influence with other politicians due to the limited time left in office. Conversely, a lame duck is free to make decisions that exercise the standard powers with little fear of consequence, such as issuing executive orders, pardons, or other controversial edicts.

duck idioms:
1. easy as duck soup Extremely easy, simple, or intuitive; requiring very little skill or effort. Boy, that test was as easy as duck soup!
A person or thing that is useless or hopeless. That new budget bill was a dead duck before it hit the Senate.
Something that is unprotected and vulnerable to an easy attack. We can't go into that area unarmed, we'd be sitting ducks!
4. all duck or no dinner -- all or nothing 全部或零(煮熟的鸭子---飞走了),”孤注一掷“ Of a situation, action, or effort resulting in either total success or total failure; all or nothing. We've got one last chance to secure an investor for the company, so it's all duck or no dinner with this meeting!
5. as a duck takes to water Easily and smoothly; naturally. Molly is such an accomplished dancer that she took to the show's choreography as a duck takes to water.
Duck face is a photographic pose, which is well known on profile pictures in social networks. Lips are pressed together as in a pout and often with simultaneously sucked in cheeks. The pose is most often seen as an attempt to appear alluring, but also as a self-deprecating, ironic gesture making fun of the pose. It may be associated with sympathy, attractiveness, friendliness or stupidity.
7. (as) happy as a duck in Arizona 不开心 Unhappy or miserable. The predominately dry, desert environment of Arizona is meant to contrast with a duck's aquatic habitat.
The duck test is a form of abductive reasoning. This is its usual expression: If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck. The test implies that a person can identify an unknown subject by observing that subject's habitual characteristics. It is sometimes used to counter abstruse arguments that something is not what it appears to be.

Wells Fargo CEO ruffles feathers with comments about diverse talent"While it might sound like an excuse, the unfortunate reality is that there is a very limited pool of black talent to recruit from," Scharf said in the memo. ruffle (one's) feathers: To annoy, irritate, or upset someone. Sarah's just teasing you. Don't let her ruffle your feathers like that!
from www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/chinese/features/todays-phrase/ep-151110 : 1. a feather in your cap
Winning that award was a real feather in my cap. It opened a lot of doors for me. Top of the class! Well done. That’s a real feather in your cap. I bet your parents will be delighted. 2. feather their own nests I hate the way politicians always manage to feather their own nests by making connections with big business. It looks like the president of the company was feathering his own nest while making hundreds of employees redundant. It turns out he was stealing from the pension fund.

Chinese whispers
Chinese whispers (Commonwealth English) or telephone (North American English) is an internationally popular children's game Origin: The notion of "Chinese whispers" stems from an unfounded idea in the 1800s that Chinese people spoke in a way that was deliberately unintelligible. It associates the Chinese language with "confusion" and "incomprehensibility". Now, the game is more commonly referred to as "the telephone game" in the United States.
As the game is popular among children worldwide, it is also known under various other names depending on locality, such as Russian scandal, whisper down the lane, broken telephone (in Greece), operator, grapevine, gossip, secret message, the messenger game, and pass the message, among others. In Turkey, this game is called kulaktan kulağa, which means from (one) ear to (another) ear. In France, it is called téléphone arabe (Arabic telephone) or téléphone sans fil (wireless telephone). In Malaysia, this game is commonly referred to as telefon rosak, in Israel as telefon shavur (טלפון שבור) and in Greece as spazmeno tilefono (σπασμένο τηλέφωνο) which all translate to "broken telephone". In Poland it is called głuchy telefon, which means deaf telephone. In the United States, the game is known under the name telephone – which in this use is never shortened to the colloquial and more common word phone.

In the 1720s and 1730s, at the height of the craze for these voices, it has been estimated that upwards of 4,000 boys were castrated annually in the service of art. Many came from poor homes and were castrated by their parents in the hope that their child might be successful and lift them from poverty (this was the case with Senesino). -- wiki

"Man Plans, and God Laughs" 谋事在人,成事在天 The phrase " Man proposes, but God disposes" is a translation of the Latin phrase "Homo proponit, sed Deus disponit" from Book I, chapter 19, of The Imitation of Christ, a 15th-century book by the German cleric Thomas à Kempis. A few modernized and paraphrased Bible translations use it as a translation of Proverbs 19:21, but the original of that verse is longer and more elaborate. (zt) Man proposes, God disposes 1864 by Edwin Landseer. wiki: Man Proposes, God Disposes is an 1864 oil-on-canvas painting by Edwin Landseer. The work was inspired by the search for Franklin's lost expedition which disappeared in the Arctic after 1845. The painting is in the collection of Royal Holloway, University of London, and is the subject of superstitious urban myth that the painting is haunted.
