The Shadows of Withered Leaves
by Xishan
laws of chance 无所不在。
The tender green of new buds bursts forth in spring is adorable like a baby, announcing the new birth after a bleak winter of muted colors.
Summer trees are parasols. Sunlight filters through bright verdant leaves, tossing patches of dancing shadows on the ground.
The autumn leaves are flaming flowers, red, yellow, and brown, igniting beauty of the finale of life.
Leaves go down in autumn wind. Like musical notes rising and falling, they sing a parting song, or perhaps a song of freedom.
If your eyes follow a leaf's descent, you will certainly marvel at its path of an unpredictable fairy. Laws of chance are everywhere.
I once believed the beauty of the foliage ended at its fleeting autumn splendor.
那些棕色的橡树叶,半枯半干,皮手套般, 真如 Robert Frost 诗中所言,“fit the earth like a leather glove ”。
Thanks to lockdown, I am only free to stroll in my neighborhood every day, though I ache to step on the narrow trails of the woods to breathe the fragrant nature.
Sometimes I look up at the trees that have lost their dense leaves. On the gently bouncing twigs, worry-free warblers peck at small red berries. If I were a bird....
Other times I stop my feet to observe the fallen leaves strewn all over the sidewalk.
Those big brown oak leaves, half withered, look just like leather gloves as Robert Frost wrote:
"The same leaves over and over again!
They fall from giving shade above
To make one texture of faded brown
And fit the earth like a leather glove. "
But what amazes me more than the trajectory of a fallen leaf is its shadow.
On the pavement curls a tiny birch leaf, pale yellow.
Its shadow is exquisitely unique --- a delicate stem propping up a withered lotus pad that is squashed round.
“The lingering gloomy autumn makes frost fall late; wilted lotus leaves are to catch the sound of raindrops.” Do you hear it? Drip drop, drip drop....
A fallen magnolia leaf with veins clear and intact. The moisture has not completely evaporated yet.
Its wavy oblong shape somehow casts a shadow of an M-shaped mountain.
If seen from the opposite side, the mountain turns upside down, like a reflection in a river.
Not far from it flutters a press of sail, a shadow of another leaf.
The asphalt pavement beneath my feet is turning into an undulating river, its ripples lapping against a little sail boat.
A fallen leaf off a plane tree. Still fresh green with saw-toothed edge.
With its top middle touching the cement, the two sides and the stem tilting upward, it casts a shadow resembling the wings of a butterfly.
When a breeze blows, the leaf drifts and rustles on the ground. As it ruffles up and down like a wavelet, its pursuing shadow appears more like a wing-flapping butterfly sans the gaudy hues.
From sunup to sundown, the angle of the sunlight changes throughout the day.
Even for the same leaf, its shadow appears differently at varied moment.
Though a leaf itself is quite thin, its surface is rather uneven, and its shadow can transform into many imaginary shapes.
Light is a magical painter. Monet painted over thirty paintings of the same Rouen Cathedral, just to capture the fleeting moment of light and shadow.
"Before the leaves can mount again
To fill the trees with another shade,
They must go down past things coming up.
They must go down into the dark decayed. "
Indeed, as Robert Frost wrote, the fallen leaves must decay.
But before returning to earth, they still offer a splendid sight of ever-changing shadows.
Forget about traveling. Shadows of leaves are just as fun to watch. Besides, they are just beyond the doorstep.
